Bruxism is a condition in which you grind, gnash, or clench your teeth. If you have bruxism, you may unconsciously clench your teeth together during the day, or clench or grind them at night (sleep bruxism).
Do I Have Bruxism?
It is important to know the signs and symptoms of bruxism and to seek regular dental care. A dull, constant headache or sore jaw when you wake is a telltale symptom of this condition. You may be experiencing bruxism if you notice any of the following symptoms:
- Rhythmic contractions of the jaw muscles
- A grinding sound at night, which may disturb the sleep of the person next to you
- Jaw muscles that are tight or painful
- Popping or clicking of the temporomandibular joint
- Long-lasting pain in the face
- Damaged teeth
- Headaches
- Occasional swelling on the side of your lower jaw caused by clenching
Not only can severe grinding damage your teeth and result in tooth loss, it can also affect your jaws, worsen TMD/TMJ, and even change the appearance of your face. Dr. Sorkin can fit you with a custom-made mouthguard to protect your teeth from grinding during sleep.
