TMJ & TMD
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jaw to your skull. You have a TMJ on both sides of your face, and they allow you to move your jaw freely up and down so you can speak properly and chew food. When one or both of these joints are misaligned or damaged, it can cause painful and annoying symptoms, which we refer to as temporomandibular dysfunction or TMD.
TMD is a degenerative disorder that can develop because the joint deteriorates due to arthritis, is subject to long-term stress from clenching and teeth grinding, or becomes injured during an accident, among other things.
Symptoms of TMD can range from mild and manageable to painful and debilitating, depending on the severity of the disorder. While there are a host of symptoms attributable to TMD, the most common among our patients include:
