Fillings No One Will Notice
Nobody wants to get a filling, but it’s a very common dental treatment that will restore the health of your tooth and keep it from further damage. During your routine dental check up is when we most often spot a tiny hole forming on the enamel of your tooth. Through the use of X-rays, we can spot these cavities forming between teeth as well. A filling treatment is a fast and easy procedure that will get you back on track to excellent dental health.
If you have any fillings, chances are they are silver, or amalgam, a type of filling that is traditionally used during the treatment. Nowadays, we can use a tooth-colored filling so it is not noticeable and blends right in with the rest of your teeth.
Tooth-colored fillings are made up of plastic resins that are ideal for smaller cavities. Not only are they invisible, but they also preserve more of your tooth than amalgam fillings. There is less drilling involved with tooth-colored fillings because the material used is more flexible than amalgam and bonds to your natural tooth so that we don’t have to remove much of the tooth structure.
Some patients have concerns about mercury in amalgam fillings and therefore ask for the composite type. The amount of mercury in the amalgam is too low to be considered dangerous. However, we do respect that some patients would rather not use the amalgam anyway. Tooth-colored fillings are a great alternative for those patients who wish to be mercury-free.
While no fillings are the best type of filling, there is a solution when it comes to restoring the damage done by tooth decay. We are happy to discuss which type of filling is best for you and your dental needs at our Spotswood office.
