Have You Heard Of This Tooth Replacement Option?
Dealing with tooth loss can be frustrating and traumatizing. I want to help my patients navigate their tooth replacement journey with the least amount of stress possible. Most patients that experience tooth loss have heard of dentures and implants, as they have been popular for quite a number of years. What if neither of those options are the best fit for the patient? I often recommend a treatment that offers the best of both worlds. Continue reading to learn more about this lesser known tooth replacement option.
What Are Overdentures?
There are times when dental implants or dentures will not work for my patients. In these circumstances, I recommend overdentures. An overdenture is a removable dental prosthesis that fits over a supporting structure such as natural teeth or dental implants. An overdenture is composed of dental crowns and acrylic plastic that simulates the natural teeth and gum tissue. Similar to other tooth replacement options, overdentures can be used to replace multiple teeth or all of the teeth.
Why Choose Overdentures?
Overdentures are the perfect mix of implants and dentures, combining many of the benefits that both treatments have to offer. Unlike dentures, overdentures are more secure in the mouth, allowing patients to enjoy their favorite foods and not worry about the hardware coming loose and falling out when eating or speaking. Overdentures are more cost effective than implants, offering patients the secure and natural feel that implants offer, but without the expense.
One of my main concerns as a dentist is choosing a tooth replacement option that allows the oral health of my patient to remain intact. Overdentures continue to offer the stimulation that is needed for the jawbone to remain healthy and avoid deterioration. Unfortunately, traditional dentures do not offer this important stimulation.
