An Easy Way To Protect Your Kid’s Teeth Against Cavities
Did you know that we now see children three years old and older? When we see our pediatric patients for an oral hygiene examination, parents are often concerned about dental decay, one of the most common oral health conditions in children. We are happy to offer a treatment that helps prevent decay from developing on teeth. Read on to learn more and see if this treatment would be beneficial to your children and your family.
What are Dental Sealants?
If you have a child in your life, you know it can be challenging to get them to brush their teeth properly, especially their molars. This can be problematic because food and bacteria can become trapped in the grooves of the teeth and lead to problems with tooth decay. To help prevent decay from developing, we offer dental sealants.
A dental sealant is a clear coating that we brush on the surface of the rear molars to protect the deep grooves in the chewing surfaces of the teeth. They work because, as the name implies, they create a seal that protects the tooth enamel. We use dental sealants most often on our pediatric patients, but they are also suitable for teenagers and adults with no decay in their rear molars.
Is the Treatment Difficult?
Dental sealants are one of the easiest treatments we provide to patients. The entire process only takes a few minutes to complete. After we clean and dry the teeth, we brush on a clear coating. We then cure the sealant with a light. It is important that you follow our after-treatment directions to ensure that the sealants harden appropriately. It is possible for sealants to fall off, especially if the patient eats a lot of sticky foods such as fruit snacks and gummies.
