At Caring Dental of Spotswood, we don’t do “routine” check-ups for our new patients. Everyone’s needs are unique, and the right treatment for someone else may not be best for you. In fact, what was adequate for you in the past may no longer be appropriate treatment for you today. Your needs change over time.
An accurate diagnosis is critical to determining your needs, and is the foundation of a treatment plan that’s right for you. This can’t be done at a rushed checkup, squeezed into a cleaning visit. People are always telling us, “that was the most high tech, thorough examination I ever had.” Indeed, the Comprehensive Exam we perform is comprised of four distinct components:
- Soft tissue/oral cancer screening
- Dental exam and mapping
- Transillumination to screen for sub surface decay and cracks
- Periodontal (gum) exam
To aide us in collecting all the necessary data, we also perform a full suite of imaging techniques, including low dose panoramic radiographs (X-ray), cavity check radiographs, and collection of clinical photographs, both intra and extra oral. If you have recent clinically acceptable radiographs, these may reduce or eliminate the need for additional images. We always practice the principles of ALARA, meaning exposure to radiation is kept “as low as reasonably achievable.” Dental x -rays are one of the lowest radiation dose studies performed. Indeed, our radiographic exam totals around 0.012 mSv… nearly 65% less than 0.035 mSv exposure passengers receive during a flight to California.

After the information is collected and reviewed, we will invite you back for a treatment conference. There is no additional fee for this service, and you are encouraged to bring a friend or family member, as well as your questions. At this meeting we will discuss treatment options and your future goals.
This level of of examination may higher than you are accustomed to, but at Caring Dental Spotswood we believe you deserve it.
