Dental Myths Debunked
At Caring Dental of Spotswood, we want to help our patients have excellent oral health. Unfortunately, some of our patients don’t always follow practices that will help ensure a positive result. Dental misconceptions can negatively affect your oral health and lead to serious complications and problems. We want to share some common dental myths that can negatively affect your oral health:
- Brushing harder means your teeth will get cleaner
This is not true and potentially harmful. Brushing your teeth too hard can cause significant damage to tooth enamel. It will begin to wear down prematurely, which can lead to problems such as tooth sensitivity. Brushing too hard can also hurt your gums. Brushing hard is not needed to ensure that your teeth are clean. Simply use a soft-bristled toothbrush and make gentle motions while brushing for two minutes. Don’t forget to use dental floss daily as well! - Brushing your teeth properly before an appointment will hide poor oral hygiene habits
This is inaccurate. Even if you brush and floss thoroughly before your oral hygiene examination appointment, we will be able to tell if you do not take great care of your teeth between appointments. There will be a higher level of tartar on your teeth and along the gumline. We can also tell if you are not flossing regularly by the appearance of your gums. It is best to maintain a thorough oral hygiene routine all year, not just before a visit to our office. - Avoid the dentist while pregnant
In fact, it’s the exact opposite. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can increase your risk of gum disease. If you are due for an oral hygiene examination during your pregnancy, keep your appointment. We can ensure no problems have developed and keep a better eye on your oral health during this special time. - There is no need to care for baby teeth
This is categorically false. Cavities can easily develop in baby teeth. While baby teeth do eventually fall out, it is important to care for them the same way you would permanent teeth. Be sure to help your child brush their teeth to ensure they are getting each tooth. It is also best to limit sticky and sugary foods.
