Habits That Are Harming Your Child’s Teeth
Teaching the children in your life good oral health habits will benefit them during their childhood and into adulthood. Just as with adults, some habits can cause serious complications with children’s oral health. The earlier you start changing harmful habits, the better off you and your children will be. Here are some habits that may be harming your children’s oral health:
Not Cleaning Teeth Properly
It is very difficult for children to clean their teeth properly. Not only do many children have a hard time cleaning their teeth, but it is common for young children to only brush the front side of their teeth or just suck on the toothbrush. If you are a parent or guardian of a young child, we recommend helping them learn the proper way to brush their teeth. If you need assistance yourself, we will be happy to provide a demonstration during your next appointment.
Unhealthy Food Choices
Not only is making healthy food choices important for your overall well-being, but it is necessary for your oral health as well. Dental decay is one of the leading medical issues in children. Sugary and starchy foods increase the risk of developing cavities, and these are the food groups that children crave. We recommend limiting chewy and sticky foods and offering plenty of fruits and vegetables.
Thumbsucking and Pacifier Use
The American Dental Association recommends that children past the age of four should not be using a pacifier or sucking their thumb. We know this can be a very difficult habit to break; however, thumbsucking and pacifier use can lead to a change in the teeth, jaw, and development of the mouth.
