Help Your Teen Facilitate Positive Oral Health Habits
At Caring Dental of Spotswood, we encourage our patients of all ages to be proactive about their dental health. This means maintaining an oral hygiene routine at home and visiting our office for routine hygiene examinations. While we know that our young patients need an adult’s help to do this, we want to encourage our teen patients to take more initiative with their oral health. We were once teens too, and we know how difficult this age can be. They are testing their wings and learning how to become functioning adults. Unfortunately, with this learning curve come some difficult times. From time to time, we see our teen patients put their oral health on the back burner, and we do not want to encourage this behavior.
Help Teens Create Good Habits
Whether you have a teenager at home or not, you may have had one in your life in some way or another, and you know how difficult it may be to get through to them. Parents often feel that teenagers aren’t listening. However, even though it might not seem like it, they are hearing what you say. The best thing you can do for your teen when it comes to their oral health is create a routine that they follow from a young age. When your teen has had an oral hygiene routine for years and knows the importance of visiting the dentist regularly, they may stray from time to time, but they will care about their oral health as adults.
We want to share some helpful tips that you can stress to your teen. Many of these helpful tips can also apply to anyone in your household:
- Limit soft drinks and sport drinks and drink water instead
- Choose healthy snack options over fast food and junk food
- Brush and floss after meals, especially when wearing braces
- Understand the dangers of sharing toothbrushes
- Wear a mouthguard when playing any sport
