Important Steps to Combat Gum Disease
There is a disease that is running rampant through American adults, and while your thoughts probably immediately go to the pandemic situation that we are currently experiencing, we are referencing something that greatly affects your oral health: Gum Disease. Gum disease currently affects more than half of American adults. Since February is Gum Disease Awareness Month, we wanted to discuss the importance of taking care of your gum health and ways that you can help prevent this disease from affecting you or a loved one.
What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease is an irritation and infection that affects the gums. Developing in two stages, gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease and can be seen as a buildup of plaque causing the gums to become irritated and inflamed. Periodontitis is the later and more severe stage of gum disease. During this stage, teeth can become loose and even fall out when pockets of decay form in the gums.
How to Detect Gum Disease
Known as the silent disease, it is not as easily detected as dental decay or other dental issues. Since there is no severe discomfort, there are other minor symptoms that you can look out for:
- Swollen or puffy gums
- Blood when brushing or flossing
- Unexplained bad breath
- Gums that appear extremely red
Ways to Combat Gum Disease
Gum disease can be kept at bay primarily under your own care. It forms when your oral health is compromised. Be sure to brush your teeth twice daily using proper brushing techniques. Do not forget to floss daily and use a mouthwash to help remove additional bacteria left behind. The most important way to combat gum disease is to stay on top of your dental exams. We monitor and check for signs of gum disease during your biannual cleanings.
If you are experiencing tenderness, bleeding when brushing, or any symptoms indicating there may be a problem with your gums, we encourage you to call our office located in Spotswood, NJ to schedule an appointment.
